The point is that someone has figured out how to package the urge to unplug, and sell it. A small investigation (from people who make a living off attention) into how “less” became a market.

It’s August. You’ve decided that’s it, this summer will be different. Maybe you’ve switched your phone to grayscale, maybe you’ve downloaded an app that blocks the other apps, maybe you’ve just buried Instagram inside a folder hoping to forget about it. You already feel a little lighter. Then, while searching “ideas to detox from your phone”, an ad pops up for an offline stay at a farmhouse, for a deliberately dumb phone that costs more than a smartphone, for a restaurant that discounts your bill if you hand over your phone at the door. Your urge to unplug has just become, in real time, an advertising target.

Nobody’s questioning that the need is genuine. We all see it, and a few numbers put it in focus: according to the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Italy’s National Institute of Health), problematic smartphone use affects roughly one in four young Italians. We won’t wade into the territory of addiction here (that’s serious ground, for professionals in the field, and it’s not our job). Our reflection lies elsewhere, and that’s exactly why we’re interested in the uncomfortable question, the one a communications agency should have the decency to ask itself before anyone else: what happens when the desire to disconnect (born as a reaction to a world that wants us permanently connected) becomes, in turn, something you can buy?

Let’s be upfront about it, because it’s the honest thing to do: we make a living off your attention. Telling you about the phenomenon of people trying to reclaim it is an exercise that concerns us directly, and we’re not exempting ourselves. If anything, we’re trying to look at it from the inside, which is the only place from which we can say something that isn’t obvious. And one premise, right away, to define the field properly: no one’s being preached at here. Not the sellers, and especially not the buyers.

“Less” is the new luxury (and no one should be ashamed of it)

Among trend analysts, a formula has been circulating for months that says it all: presence is the new luxury, silence the new status symbol. There’s even a “Quiet Life Movement” now, one that no longer aims at the occasional weekend detox but at a permanent reconfiguration of our relationship with technology: fewer screens, fewer notifications, less of everything.

@lisi.quietdiaries

quiet moments alone are so good for the soul #aesthetic #quietlife

♬ оригинальный звук – та, которая saida

Exactly how many hours we spend in front of a screen every day, nobody can say for certain: estimates swing quite a bit depending on who’s measuring and what they’re measuring, anywhere from just over five hours to seven and beyond. But the point isn’t the decimal point. It’s that looking away has become a mark of distinction: the way having the latest gadget once was, today not having one is.

Let’s say one thing right away, though, because it matters to us. There’s nothing to feel bad about if putting the phone down is hard. Those screens are engineered with surgical precision to be impossible to let go of, and they’re extremely good at their job. So good, in fact, that many people need outside help to pull it off: a rule, a place, an app, someone to physically take the phone out of their hands. And it’s exactly into that space (the genuine need for a hand to take the phone away from us) that the market has slipped in.

Three ways to turn off your phone (and a contradiction in each)

Disconnection is popping up everywhere, in contexts that couldn’t be further apart. We picked three, recent and concrete, because lined up together they tell the same story from different angles, and because in each one, if you look closely, there’s a small contradiction worth not sweeping under the rug.

The first comes from music venues. On 22 June, at La Défense Arena in Paris, Iron Maiden made the entire standing area “phone-free“: phones sealed at the entrance in dedicated pouches (the same ones already seen in Italy at Bob Dylan and Bono concerts) and returned only on the way out. Singer Bruce Dickinson called the smartphone a genuine “infestation”, inviting the audience to put it down and look around: the people, the band, the emotion. Noble, sincere. However (here’s the contradiction) that night the ban only applied in Paris, and only because the concert was being filmed for the tour’s official film. At San Siro, a few days earlier, phones were allowed without any problem (source: Rockol). Translation: the audience’s disconnection was certainly meant to help them enjoy the show more, but also to secure clean footage of a product to sell.

The second is Italian, and it happens at the table. A growing number of bars and restaurants are rewarding those who give up their phones: at Stonehenge Bar in Teramo, anyone who hands their smartphone to the waiter for the evening gets a 15% discount on the bill; at Al Condominio in Verona, anyone who leaves it in the “post box” receives a bottle of wine; in Cuneo, customers collect points on a loyalty card (source: Donna Moderna). Lovely, convivial, sincere. However, here too: the Verona model has by now become a registered trademark aiming for franchising, and several restaurateurs openly admit that with a phone in hand, customers slow down, take photos, get distracted, and the table “turns over” more slowly: a real financial loss. Disconnecting is good for you and, as it happens, good for the till too.

The third is the furthest from commerce, and it’s almost a social experiment. Demand is growing for summer camps without smartphones: in Candriai, in Trentino, the Aerat cooperative has built a camp for children aged 8 to 13 where not even a single dedicated screen-time slot is scheduled, while the San Benedetto high school in Piacenza was among the first in Italy to have students deposit their phones in sealed pouches for the entire day, breaks included (source: Avvenire). Here there’s little profit involved: it’s pedagogy, not sales. If anything, the contradiction is that teaching kids to live without screens now requires organising a dedicated activity for it, complete with a method. “Not using your phone” has become a programme.

Three gestures identical in form (taking the phone away) but with different engines behind them: a film to shoot, a bill to turn over, kids to educate. And this is where things get interesting for those of us who, professionally, build the reasons why people do things.

The “digital detox economy”, or when it’s a brand switching off your phone

Because here’s the real leap: it’s no longer just educators or restaurateurs inviting us to unplug, but the big brands. Il Sole 24 Ore named it the “digital detox economy”: campaigns are multiplying that, instead of chasing your attention, push you to switch off and live the relationship in person. It’s “presence marketing”. Heineken launched “Social off socials” globally to encourage real-life socialising; Sassuolo Calcio, in Italy, chose days of silence on social media, turning the renunciation of visibility into an educational gesture.

The line is thin, and some people are trying to trace it. Alessio Carciofi, who studies these phenomena, puts it well, again in Il Sole 24 Ore: if you invite people to switch off while continuing to bombard them with push notifications and artificial urgency, that’s opportunism; if you actually change the incentives instead (less pressure, more choice, more transparency), that’s responsibility. He calls it, in a perfect formula, “wellbeing washing“: the equivalent of greenwashing, applied to digital wellbeing. Preaching calm while selling noise.

And yes, there’s another layer, the one that implicates us more directly: behind many of these moves there’s a consultancy, an agency, someone who suggested to the brand that it use disconnection as a lever. Detox has also become a communication format, a topic to pitch in a meeting. We’re not pointing the finger at anyone in particular (that would be too easy), because it’s exactly the kind of idea that could be born in a room like ours.

The part where we own up to it

Here we are at the most uncomfortable point, and it’s right to face it head-on. We’re a communications agency: building the levers that push people to want something is, literally, what we’re paid to do. Recounting with detachment “how the market exploits the urge to unplug”, pretending to watch from the bleachers, would be the most dishonest thing we could do. We’re on the field, not in the stands.

We’re also a Benefit corporation, a legal form that commits us, by statute, to measuring our impact and not just our revenue. One more reason to look the contradiction in the eye instead of talking around it. We sell attention, yes. Precisely for that reason, we don’t think we can also ride its opposite while pretending to stand outside it. There’s a real difference between telling the story of a phenomenon and turning it into yet another campaign that uses its own supposed honesty as a hook. The second one is exactly what we’re trying to take apart here.

And there’s a knot that, as communicators, we find almost touching in its difficulty: a sincere proposal (the restaurateur who genuinely believes in conviviality, the farmhouse that genuinely wants to give you three days of silence) still needs marketing to exist, survive and become known. There’s no way to make a good idea known without communicating it. Which means the ethical engine and the commercial one, more often than not, aren’t enemies: they coexist in the same gesture. Telling where one ends and the other begins is hard even for us, who do this for a living.

Five minutes, so far

Here we are at the end. You’ve spent a few minutes reading a whole article, in a summer that was pushing you to do the opposite. We won’t tell you to switch off your phone: that would be hypocritical, given that you found us through a screen, and that we work on those screens. We’ll only tell you this: next time a brand, a venue or a holiday invites you to “really unplug”, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re being played, but it’s worth asking who benefits, besides you, from that moment of disconnection. Sometimes the answer is “only me”, and that’s wonderful. Sometimes it isn’t. Knowing which doesn’t spoil anything: it just makes you an audience a little better equipped to defend itself against the contradictions of our world.

And if this idea made you think for even a second, well, pass it along. Even though, yes, we’re well aware of the irony of asking you that.

The need to disconnect from screens is real, widespread, and this
